Wizarding Sex Ed - CTan

Wizarding Sex Ed

(A Harry-Potter-themed icebreaker event.)

Calling all witches, wizards, and Hogwarts alumni of all genders! It’s very important before you attempt to enter the premises of the Geeky Kink Event that you attend this important Ministry-approved orientation seminar on erotic magic.

We’ll be teaching you a specific list of sex-related spells and techniques that should ONLY be practiced on other magical people, as well as orienting you to important Muggle knowledge such as the fact that they have wands, too! (Yes they seem to be of either only one specific color–purple?–or to have come from Japanese wandmaker Hitachi.)

No potions allowed.

Please bring your wands (or a practice wand will be issued to you) and be ready to use it.

Tarot as Storytelling - CTan

Tarot as Storytelling

In this class we will explore the Tarot as a writing tool, as a method for divining what lies within. No prior knowledge of the Tarot is necessary for this class, though those experienced with the cards will also find plenty to engage them here.
All storytellers, bards, and writers are welcome to learn the so-called magic behind using the archetypes in the Tarot as a means to channel character, plot, conflict, resolution, and theme.
Please bring a deck if you have a favorite.

Cosplay as Roleplay - CTan

Cosplay as Roleplay

Chances are if you’ve participated in any kind of BDSM play, you’ve played a bit with roles, even if the roles are as basic as “master” and “slave.” How do you level up to something more complicated or dramatic, and why would you want to?

In this class we’ll talk about using the techniques of improvisational acting to add drama to roleplay scenes and make them run smoothly. Roleplay is a powerful relationship tool because it bonds our imaginations together and creates an incredible sense of shared experience. Whether you want to see what would really happen if Catwoman captured the Batman, or you want to do a doctor/patient scene to jazz up using all the medical toys you bought, we have tips for you!

Queering Harry Potter - CTan

Queering Harry Potter

When J.K. Rowling announced to the world after the publication of the final book of the Harry Potter series that Dumbledore was gay, was she secretly inviting us all to look for what other “obvious but unspoken” queer characters and relationships were sitting there among the pages?

We will discuss the ample evidence for the queerness of other characters in the series, and tackle such questions as “is Ginny Weasley a beard?”

Appropriation versus Diversity - CTan
Appropriation versus Diversity
Beating the Double-edged Sword

One of the adages fed to writing students everywhere is “write what you know.”
But anyone who writes only about themselves is likely to be accused of lacking in diversity and needing to represent under-represented voices/characters more. Write about anyone other than yourself, though, and you risk being accused of appropriation.

How do you get around this double-edged sword? And how do you keep this struggle from empowering your internal censor to the point where you are too paralyzed to write anything at all? Politically progressive, inclusive voices are too important to be silenced by fear! Come get empowered to find your inner voice and tell the stories that need to be told.
